In 1990, Grand Prairie Seminary began a new relationship with Nexus, the parent company of educational and treatment centers such as Onarga Academy which now occupies the campus. Since the arrival of Onarga Academy, the school has once again become a vibrant center for education.
The GPS/Onarga Academy facilities now include 12 buildings with two new dormitories, a new classroom building, a new industrial arts building, a new group home, a new transition home, two new foster care homes and a free standing coffee/gift shop that occupies what was once the Onarga Town Hall built in 1897, since renovated and now managed by the students…all to meet the growing needs of the Academy.
As a member of the Nexus family of treatment and educational centers, Onarga Academy has earned an outstanding reputation for effectively treating troubled youth with behavioral, emotional and communicative difficulties.
Onarga Academy is the home to about 85 adolescent males who have the opportunity for fuller lives through educational, recreational and vocational experiences. Each youth also works diligently on an individualized treatment plan that focuses on managing his unique challenges.
A great deal of the Academy staff’s work with adolescent males emphasizes relationship, communication and social skill development. The staff possesses a sophisticated level of training and expertise, as well as a commitment to meeting the Academy’s mission of “Changing Lives.”
The goal of GPS remains the same as it was 150 years ago…quality education with a focus on the well being of students.
